Established in 1946 by the esteemed astrophysicist Viktor Hambardzumyan, the observatory has significantly contributed to the field of astrophysics in Armenia. An hour-long guided tour provides visitors with an insightful experience, showcasing the observatory's historic achievements. Notably, in 1971, it hosted the “First International Symposium on the Problem of Extraterrestrial Civilizations and Communication with Them.” Although the observatory remains active, only a portion of the complex is currently operational with no ongoing scientific projects. Another gem in Gyumri is the Museum of Urban Life (Dzitoghtsyan Museum), which attests to the city's rich history and culture. This magnificent house was built in 1872 by the wealthy merchant Petros Dzitoghtsyan from the famous red stones of Shirak and was converted into a museum in 1984. During the Soviet era, the house served public purposes and hosted more than 20 families until 1980. The museum's interior ceilings, traditional carpets, and other decorations are a stunning visual spectacle. The museum is divided into two sections; the first room displays pictures of famous figures, including Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Jacques Cousteau, as well as Italian and European furniture in the Dzitoghtsyan rooms, where you can find a piano imported from Italy and other furniture pieces imported from Russia and Europe. The second room exhibits pictures of old Gyumri and 19th-century maps of old Alexandropol. It also contains a peculiar display of keys on the wall, along with a precise architectural model of the old city.
